Things that make you go hmmm...

It's only been a week so far but there has been many situations that have made me feel like a kid again. Simple things like flushing the toilet...the button is on the top and not a handle on the side. It may seem so small and no big deal but since it's obviously an everyday thing...it begins to feel awkward. Just can't wait to get back and feel awkward again when I'm trying to press the top of our toilets hahaha

2. The light switches are opposite and also the doors I noticed. I would pull when I should push and I would push when I should pull. It's quite funny if you ask me.
3. My key to my apartment looks like a treasure chest key
4. They have coat check!! Sorry but to me I was very excited.
5. Food is different but I expected that...yesterday I got a super pizza...when i brought it home to eat it had eggs and like a bacon on top. It was more like a breakfast pizza.
6. Facial expressions are different here, but the Finnish are very friendly to me.
7. My washing machine was a very interesting experience last night. I went to open the machine after visiting the store for detergent and I will provide pictures because it will be hard to explain. Most instruction booklets for appliances come in Danish, Swedish and Finnish...so I relied on google translate and also pictures to figure it out. But there are no dryers so I would just hang my clothes up to dry.
8. My keyboard is different so if I type some different character by accident I apologize. ä, €, ö for example.
9. My elevator for the apartment is like a photo booth...very tiny..and I can't help but laugh when I try to fit me and my backpack in there.
10. My office is circular (the only one in town like it)
11. The time and measurements are different here. They use what I call military time, they use celcius to describe temperature and kilometers to say distance.
12. My office has a starbuck looking machine that produces 20 different coffees. (Mike its quite the treat!!!)
13. I have to walk like a penguin because the first day I slipped 4 times on the way to work and thought I was going to break my leg from the snow.
14. Grocery store and store for trashbags, paper towels are separated. By the way trashbags are not in a box. They are rolled up and sold by the roll. All food is in a different language than english so I sort of bought what I saw others buying and so I basically could have been eating anything...no wonder my stomach has been tweaking...
15. You purchase your own bags for your groceries.
16. There aren't any pay phones that I have found. :) That was an adventure in itself.
17. Transportation is bus, train, plane, walk, car, tram and metro.
18. Escalators are sensitive to motion. In other words I thought it was broken and then as I walked closer and it sensed I was there it started moving...
19. They have subway, mcdonalds and pizza place but I refuse to go to any of them.
20. Besides dogs the only other animal I have seen are pigeons.

So far that is all I can think of that make me wonder. It's the simple little things that make this experience that much better...When I think of more I will write them down for sure. My next post I will speak about my job and my first week here in Finland and at Bonnier. I promise to post more pics soon too!

I truly love this post....It is different, even the small things but it's like an adventure too. Good on ya, for trying new foods rather than the usual McD's. When I went overseas in the Navy it was the safest bet, but sampling new foods will open your eyes and expose you to new things. Love the coffee machine, where can I get one....lol....Take care, stay warm and be careful on the snow.....Todd :-)

You should go into the McDonald's at least once and see what they have! I went to McDonald's in Switzerland and it was completely different from ours here and it was very good! Much more gourmet. Glad to hear you’re having a good time! Can’t wait to see more pictures!! Take care and have fun! :)

I agree with Pamela...It's definitely worth a shot to check out the golden arches in another country. I went to McDonalds in Panama and they were more KFC style than American burger style. I could get a chicken breast and wing as the main entree in one of the value meals. I know...crazy!

Have you figured out the food yet? Gone out to dinner? Do they take longer to serve you there? You know Americans are always in a rush and I have heard in other countries they eat slower.
